Accessible mentoring program will reach more women in communications and technology across BC

Women working in communications and technology will have more opportunities to find a mentor, or become a mentor themselves, in 2021 thanks to a collaboration between the Discovery Foundation and Women in Communications and Technology’s BC Chapter (WCTBC).

WCTBC has once again been selected as a 2021 Discovery Foundation Technology Education Program (TEP) agent to deliver its Speed Mentoring Program.

In 2021, WCTBC collaborated with the Discovery Foundation to run three Speed Mentoring events with the goal of breaking down barriers to mentorship for both mentors and mentees. While the pandemic presented challenges, the WCTBC and Discovery Foundation reimagined speed mentoring and went virtual. This meant that more women across BC were able to reap the benefits of mentoring, in a fun way that helped us stay connected, even when we were forced to be apart.

The program attracted women, trans and non-binary people from entry-level to C-suite. All were seeking opportunities to either receive mentorship or to hone their mentoring skills.

WCTBC Co-Chair Christin Wiedemann said she was delighted that the Speed Mentoring program would run again in 2021.

“We can’t thank the Discovery Foundation and its CEO Dr. David Harper enough for their continuous support over the past three years, especially as we transitioned to a virtual event format in 2020. The response we get from our community shows that there is still a real need for this type of programming, and we’re excited to be able to offer speed mentoring for the fourth consecutive year.”

The first 2021 session of The Discovery Foundation’s Speed Mentoring Program in Collaboration with WCT will be held on Tuesday April 6 between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. For more details and to register, click here.
